BEEF MARKET EASIER
Late Commercial —
WESTFIELD STOCK SALE runners MAKE TO £lO WESTFIELD, 2.30 p.m. J One of the heaviest yardings of j ■ steers seen in the yards this year i came forward to Westfield to-day. The market for all classes of beef j eased as a result. Best ox made to 37s a hundred; best young cow and heifer to 335. An aggregate yarding of little short of 900 head of fat cattle was drawn from all parts of the province. A feature of the offering was the big entry of cattle from the North, several big drafts of steers coming forward from those parts. A big percentage of the Northern offerings could have done with better finish. Approximately 480 head of steers came forward. Bidding tended to drag over the greater part of the sale. Buyers for export were noted bidding on several lines of medium weight cattle for the first time for several weeks. Top price of the day was secured for a pen of three exceptionally solid prime big-boned Hereford, bullocks on account of a Waikato vehdor. The pen went to R. E. Stott, Birkenhead, for j £lB. A line of 15 choice prime steers on account of G. Vosper, Cambridge, made up to £l6 15s, and averaged £ls 14s 4d. . Eight very choice medium- weight steers on account N. Taylor, Taupiri, made to £l4 2s 6d. Twenty-four good quality handyweight northern steers on account P. H. Going, Kamo, averaged £l3 12s, making up to £l4 17s 6d. Fifteen medium to heavy prime steers on account B. Reed, Waerenga. made to £ls 10s and averaged £l4 7s 6d. Seventeen small to handy weight steers on account Ring Brothers, Hinuera, made to £l3 17s 6d. Eighteen medium to heavy weight steers on account 10. G. Browne, Hinuera, made to £l3 15s. Sixteen heavy prime steers from Chamber Brothers, Pularuru, made up to £l6. Twenty-nine medium weight steers on account F. J. Heintz, Mataroa, made to £ls 7s 6d. The offering of cows and heifers was a most mediocre one and made up largely of light-weight sorts drawn from the dairy herds of the province. Bidding was steady throughout, the smaller butchers buying freely. A Westfield price record is claimed for a heavy prime 18-month runner, which went to .T. Rowe, Newmarket, for £lO. The calf was sold on account J. Douglas, Pukekohe. Prices, generally, in this section held at late rates. Extra heavy prime vealers made to £6 12s: heavy prime, £4 10s to £5 ss: medium, £3 Jss to £4 ss: light. £2 10s to £3 ss; small and fresh dropped, 5s to £ 2 Bs. Top price in the cow and heifer section was secured for a line of eight solid-framed choice prime young cows and heifers on account of Mr. James J. Taylor, Cambridge. The line made to £l2 10s for a pen ! sold to Mr. J. Rowe. Newmarket. An increased offering of sheep came forward, but because of the heavy yarding of cattle a start was not made in this section until after 2.10 o'clock.
