Great South Road Will be Beautified
TREE-PLANTING PLAN OWNERS WILL CO-OPERATE A comprehensive tree-planting scheme tor beautifying the Great South Road was submitted by Mr. D. Hay to a meeting of the Great South Road Beautifying Council at Otahuhu ; yesterday. Mr. G. \V. Hutchison presided, and representatives were present from the Auckland Automobile , Association. Papakura and Papatoetoe ' Beautifying Societies, One Tree Hill Road Board. Papatoetoe, Manurewa. and Papakura Town Boards, Mauukau County Council, New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, the Institute of; Surveyors, and the Institute of Arehi- ! tects. Mr. Hay's scheme dealt with each section of the main highway as far south at Papakura. He recommended a planting scheme' according to contour and soil conditions. Among the trees and shrubs most recommended for the proposal were rock lily, pohutukawa. eucalyptus, yellow kowhai. evergreen oaks, weeping | willow, and maple. The Japanese I cherry was reported to be too difficult to cultivate. The chairman stated that the council had the sum of £73 available for grants to local bodies willing to improve their frontages to the Great South Road. It was agreed to bring the scheme before the notice of the local bodies concerned. It was reported that the Town Planning Association, the One Tree Hill and Ellerslie Town Boards, were in accord with the council's scheme to improve the apex of the triangle between the Great South Road and the Ellerslie - Panmure Road, at present occupied by a disused forge. It was said that several propertyowners were willing to adopt treeplanting programmes, and an offer of 160 trees from a member of the council was acknowledged. Mr. Hutchison was re-elected chairman. and Mr. F. K. Leonard was appointed vice-chairman. Mr. H. Grierson was appointed to the executive of the council.
