When the cargo of bananas brought to Lyttelton by the Governm nt motorship Maui Pomarc was opened to-day St was found that earlier reports as to their being in excellent condition were rather optimistic. Th© bananas were in only fair order and a large quantity is untit for human consumption. Altogether 770 cases were delivered. The bananas from Niue were in fair condition, but those from Samoa were in indifferent order. Some of the Samoan bananas brought only Is and Is 6d a case. The average auction price was 9s to 12s.
