OHINEMURI COUNTY COUNCIL

The usual monthly meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council was held a: Paeroa on Wednesday. In reply to the council's requests to the Main Highways Board for the raising of the main highway between Paer a and Te Aroha "to eliminate flooding from the Waihou River, the assistant-engineer from the Public Works Department at Paeroa advised that the Main Highways Board did not regard the flooding as serious. The Te Aroha-Paeroa Road is one that is much used, more especially by Auc.kia.nd motorists, but after heavyrain traffic is invariably suspended. The Minister of Mines, in response to a letter from the council, replied to the effect that the suggestion of the county that the Government should acquire the aerial and underground tram ways at Karangahake had been carefully investigated and it was considered that it was useless to spend much money on securing these rights. There was not sufficient activity on the goldfield to warrant the service asked for. The Minister added that if, however, the council and the owners of the mines were prepared to find £l2O toward the purchase of the tramways and privileges he would undertake to provide half the cost conditionally on the council undertaking to maintain and control it in the future.
