“PERFORMED A DUTY”
MR. BAILDON’S COMMENT
WHAT CANDIDATES THINK “I am pleased that the confidence of electors has again been placed in me. I appreciate it all the more because of the fact that I certain things have been said about the City Council which i considered were absolutely unjustified. I thought it was my duty, as the head of the City Council, to contest the election, if only in order to justify the work that we have done during my term as Mayor.” rpHIS was a statement made last evening by Mr. Baildon when it was known that his re-election was assured. “I wish to thank the voluntary helpers who gave me their assistance during the present campaign,” the Mayor continued. “I did not have a j great deal of money with which to 1 contest the election, hut my friends who supported me four years ago are : supporting me to-day, and it is to ; their loyal support that I owe my present position. I assure you that !it will be my endeavour during the next two years to justify the confidence you have placed in me. This will be my aim, as it has been in the past, ill spite of adverse criticism that has come from certain ratepayers.” “NATURALLY DISAPPOINTED” Asked to comment on the result Mr. | Thomas Bloodworth said: “Naturally I am disappointed, not so much for my own sake as for that of the people who worked so hard for my return. I appreciate greatly their efforts, and I am also grateful to all those electors who east their votes in my favour. I congratulate Mr. Baildon on his victory. The contest has been a good one and has been fought fairly and cleanly, and I feel sure that now it is over we can all go forward doing our best for the city. I would also like to thank the newspapers for the way in which they have reported my meetings.” "LIKE CINCINNATUS” Mr. Vaile, at the conclusion of his campaign, had observed that they had had fun and still held to that when the result was beyond dispute. “I congratulate Mr. Baildon on his victory. I shall be iike Cincinnatus, and return to the plough,” he said. “1 have enjoyed the campaign very much, and I will be just as good friends with Mr. Baildon in the future as X have been in the past.” I
