“BEYOND CONTROL”

YOUTH SENT TO BORSTAL CONVERSION OF CAR As there was little the probation officer could say in his favour, John Herbert James Mayhill was sent to the Waikeria Borstal Institute for two years when he appeared in the Police Court this morning. Mayhill, a labourer, aged 19, appeared on charges of stealing 17 fowls valued at £5 from George Frederick Haven and converting to his own use a car valued at £250 and belonging to Cecil Jenkinson. He had been remanded so that a report could be made upon him. The sub-inspector mentioned that the damage which resulted from Mayhill's collision with another car amounted to over £9. There was no chanco of the youth ever paying the money and it was no use making an order for restitution.

In the opinion of Mr. W. J. Campbell. probation officer, Mayhill was beyond control. It was quite in accordance with the wishes of his relatives that he should serve a term of reformative detention.
