CITY’S CENTENARY
HOW EVENT SHOULD BE CELEBRATED MR BLOOD ORTH’S SCHEME 5n the opinion of Mr. T. Biooti orth, the building of the Wait: r.ata Bridge and the completion if the road along the waterfror would be a fitting and useful worl to mark the centenary of Auck land. POURING an address at St. Heliers last evening, the Labour candidate for the Mayoralty referred to the need for preparations in anticipation of this event. "In addition to festivities, we ought to have some great work finished by 1940,” he said. “Sir George Grey imagined a city extending from Tamaki to the Whau, and reaching to the shores of both harbours. The people should aim to do that by 1940." With the completion of the road and the bridge, the city would be enclosed within a road made for the easy and convenient travel of a free and happy people, with the two shores of the harbour connected by a bridge, as proof that not only had the city reached the limits set for it by its early founders, but also had reached across the harbour and toward the sea, stretching out its hands to welcome strangers from afar. Mr. Bloodworth discussed the qualifications of his three opponents, say ing that the present Mayor had held office for four years, and by general consent had failed Another candidate had had no experience of munici pal work. He had served no apprenticeship. He claimed that as an advantage, but it would not be so regarded in any company or private concern. The third candidate was described as being not short-sighted, but oversighted. He imagined things, and then thought he had seen them. He thought he saw little things, and magnified them into big things. Mr. Bloodworth then advanced his own claims on the lines of previous speeches, and at the close, after answering questions, be was accorded a vote of thanks. Mr. J. W. Carr presided.
