Lightless Motor-Cycle Crashes Into Tram
TWO MEN KILLED FATALITY AT CHRISTCHURCH Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. THROUGH the motor-cycle they were riding crashing into a tramcar at Opawa, Alexander Candlish, a married man, of Linwood, and Herbert George Bugg, of Woolston, aged 30, were killed last evening. The accident occurred at a corner near Locarno Street, Opawa. Tlie tram was outward bound, having left Cathedral Square at 10.10 p.m. It was struck head-on by the motor-cycle. The cycle was badly smashed and the front of the tram damaged. Mr. Bugg, who was aged 33, a single man and an ex-soldier, the rider of the motor-cycle, was killed instantly, his jaw being smashed. Mr. Candlish, who was riding on the pillion seat, received severe injuries and died shortly after being taken to hospital. He was a married man with eight children, mostly grown up. The tramway motorman says the cycle had no light and was travelling fast. The police state that both men had been caught earlier in the evening riding a motor-cycle without a light. Both were returned soldiers, Mr. Candlish winning decorations in France. Mr. Bugg was a senior League football player.
