CLUB ROWING
SATURDAY’S CONTESTS Rowing events held on Saturday afternoon: WEST END CLUB Handicap single sculls, for the Hentoil Cup were rowed on Saturday afternoon by the West End Club. There were six competitors and some good races resuited. The results were:— First Heat—R. R. Woodside (3s) beat I. Baker (scr). by 2ft. Second heat: E. AI. Taylor (7s) beat O. Felton (sor) by two lengths. Third heat: AI. Con wav (6s) beat A. Lawrence (6s) by one le.ngtli. First semi-final: R. R. Woodside beat Parvin (10s) by half a length. Second semi-final: E. AI. Toy lor beat AI. Conway by one length. A hardfought final resulted in R. R. Woodside winning by one length from E. AI. Taylor. WAITEMATA CLUB The Waitemata Boating Club's handicap pair-oar trials for trophies donated by Alessrs. Fearon Brothers were started on Saturday afternoon. Eight crews were entered, but owing to an accident to one of the boats, only two heats were decided. In the first heat J. Pearce and B. Gladding (235) defeated F. F. Simmons and W. Jones (235) by two lengths. R. Shersen and E. Horning (235) defeated J. Usher and P. Usher (235) in the second heat. The remaining heats will be rowed between P. Platt and C. Cairns (15s), and R. ArcGehan and R. Smith (3s): D. Shore and G. Barker (scr) and J. H. Lawrence aud A. Young ISs). NORTH SHORE CLUB Trophies presented by Air. R. F. Bennett were rowed for by the North Shore Rowing Club on Saturday afternoon. Four crews competed The course was from the cable steamer Iris to the boathouse. The judge was Air. S. But land and the starting by mutual consent. First Heat—The crews were: D. Davies, H. Jackson, D. Townsend. S. Jinks; E. Korn, F. Eaton. C. Eagles, J. Burfoot. Davies forged ahead slightly at the start, but at the Devonport Wharf Korn closed up. Davies again increased his lead, and rowing steadily, won by one and a-quarter lengths. Second Heat—The crews were: F. Norris, S. Gardiner, 1... Stead. E. Carlyle, W. Dean, B. Rutledge, C. Oliver, J. Burfoot. From a good start there was little be tween the crews for about 100 yards. Norris’s crew, rowing a very fast stroke, then drew ahead and! went on to win easily. In the final fours stroked by D. Davies and F. Norris met Both crews jumped away at a smart pace and rowed fairly evenly until nearing the wharf, when Norris took the lead. Steadily drawing out. Norris was several lengths ahead at the three-quarter mark. Davies then spurted and although decreasing the gap. suffered defeat by one and a-half lengths.
