BOXING AT NEW PLYMOUTH DONOVAN TOO GOOD (Special to THE SUN) NEW PLYMOUTH, Saturday. The Taranaki Boxing Association tonight staged a successful tournament before a record house. Air. Alan Alaxvvell was third man in the ring, and his decisions were popularly received. The main fight was between Taylor (Auckland) and Donovan (Waitara), but it lasted only six rounds, Taylor being outclassed and outweighted. Cotterill (Wellington) gained a points decision over Crowley (Pahia'tua) after a clash that did not raise much enthusiasm. Several amateur bouts created keen interest, and provided spectacular bouts, some of the boys displaying promise. In the big fight between Taylor and Donovan the Waitara fireman went in at the opening of the bout to polish the Aucklander off in double quick time. There was little between them in the initial round, which was confined to infiighting. In tho second lap, Donovan landed a couple of heavy rights to the head, and was cautioned for the use of the “rabbit'’ punch. The Waitara man punished his rival severely at the commencement of the third round, but Taylor came back and fought stubbornly. Another cautions was administered to Donovan just at the gong. FIERCE FIGHTING Clever ducking and side-stepping' by the Aucklander saw Donovan miss with vicious uppercuts in the early stages of the next session, but Taylor was under heavy punishment when time was sounded. At the opening of the fifth round, the Waitara man knocked his opponent through the ropes, but Taylor came back, and mixed it with his heavier rival, but Donovan was forcing the issue when the bell rang. With half the distance gone. Donovan again forced the fight, and usingleft and right freely, soon had the Aucklander in trouble, and before tin?, sixth session closed. Taylor was clean knocked out. Ho put up a. game fight, showing cleverness at times, but lie was incqually matched.
