WAIKUMETE PLANTATION FIRE

Sir, As' thousands of pounds of city ratepayers’ money has gone up in smoke here, it is only right that the public should know how this fire started. I have been driving- past this plantation twice a day for the past month. The day before the fire I saw a gang of men burning a belt along the lower edge of the plantation. The next day was windy. I did not get out until about half-past two o’clock, and I passed the fire brigade on my way out. The fire got away from the belt burners and did enormous havoc before the brigade was summoned. Quite .95 per cent, of the trees in the burnt area will die, and fully half of the plantation is gone. It appears to have been caused by stupidity 'nd jeglect. MORE TAGI-IT.
