THE RIDERS

JOCKEYS AND THEIR MOUNTS ARRANGED FOR SATURDAY j s CONTEST FOR SUPREMACY The majority of the crack jockeys will be riding at Ellerslie on Saturday and Monday, and they have been pretty well booked up for the meeting. The rich stakes always on offer in races at Auckland’s headquarters always attract the cream of the Dominion's horsemen, for the bigger the stake money the bigger the riding fees, which are based on a percentage. For instance, the rider of the winner of the Easter Handicap will receive in fees alone about £4O, and if the same jockey also succeeds in the valuable two-year-old classic, the Champagne Stakes, that sum will be doubled, and with a full share of mounts in the other events, would make his cheque within the vicinity of three figures, which would be quite a nice day’s work even for a horseman with the “breeze” in his favour. Jockeys’ Premiership More than this, with the race for the jockeys’ premiership at such an interesting stage the competition at the Easter meeting will be keener than ever on the part of the riders. The position of the leaders to date on the ladder is as follows: L. J, Ellis 45 L. G. Morris 41 R. Reed 38 H. Goldfinch 36 A. E. Ellis 33 B. H. Morris 30 T. Green 29 C. W. France .. .. 29 H. Wiggins 29 R. McTavish 25 It is probable that the above list will undergo material alteration in the next few days. Many racegoers, especially the womenfolk, are always looking for omens when it conies to solving race problems, and others again persist in following their own favourite jockey—a precarious method of making money on a racecourse, but not more so than by following other methods. However, the following comprehensive list serves to show the engagements made for most of the horsemen riding at Ellerslie this week-end: W. H. Jones—Vallar, Sleepy Sol, War Officer and Praetor. J.
