Easter Carnival in Full Swing on Saturday
At Ellerslie
Rich Classics and Handicaps Interesting Card Reviewed EVERYTHING points to the autumn meeting of the Auckland Racing Club at Ellerslie on Saturday and Monday being an unqualified success, fine weather only being required to ensure some capital sport. The course is in excellent order. A review of Saturday’s programme by “Early Bird” is given below. On Saturday the principal events to be decided are the Easter Handicap, G.N. Champagne Stakes and G.N. Oaks, and on Monday the main attractions will be the Autumn Handicap and the G.N. St. Leger. Toxeuma is the only three- uaTree ’. !? 0 year-old engaged, but he is in such great form that he wiil be a worthy representative of his age. It has been said that the three-year-olds this season are only fair; who knows that Toxeuma will not make the critics eat their words before this fixture concludes? Others that can be liked for this opening run on Monday are Oorinax, Papatu, The Lover, Desert Glow, Hyde Park, Queen Arch. Wenday, Sir Archie, Lunette, Glenstar, Sleepy Sol and the better of the Takanini pair, Tidal and Ti Tree. When it is all summed up, however, backers may be found plumping for: TOXEUMA and CORINAX 1017 GREAT NORTHERN OAKS Of £700; 1J miles Mon Star . . The event is covered more fully elseKawamp . . s 30 where on this page, but it can be said here that standing Prodice .... S 10 out are the Te Awamutu trained Prodice and the Hawera Gold Money . S 10 trained Llanore, the latter being bred along the right lines to run out a middle journey. It is quite possible that it is in this direction that possibilities in Mithra, Gold Money, Te Money, Kawainga, Katuseha and Lucy Rose may be found wanting. The lastnamed is a filly with a very big heart, and she may turn out to be the surprise packet, All the same, one cannot imagine big betters going, outside; PRODICE and LLANORE 1 O BRIGHTON HURDLES Of £500; 2 miles ♦Beau The end of this journey will no Glenofus . . 9 10 Cavalier ... 11 1 doubt find some wanting, for it re- Kilburn ... 9 7 King’s Guard 10 12 quires a thoroughly well seasoned Karamu ... 9 3 Wiltshire ’ io 7 horse to run out two miles over the Kamehameha 9 3 Manganf. . . The latter is a useful sort, and if started here will not be friendless. A half dozen that appeal more than the other half of the acceptors are Beau Cavalier, Kawini, Mangani (who is reported as working in great style), Ramblin’ .Kid, Kilburn and Odin, and this sextette should provide the place-getters. Perhaps the most money will be forthcoming in support of: KILBURN and KAWINI 1 EASTER HANDICAP Of £1,500; 1 mile Rcremoana 9 6 Superior beginning qualities, to- Kingfield ..77 Branson ... 8 5 ... , , Merry Mint 7 7 Bright Glow 8 4 & f I th f r " lth th ® abll . lty to s ° at top In the Shade 7 6 Royal the way; m 1 other words, to Mosque .... 7 l Doulton ... 713 sprint for a mile. He has not Lorient 11. . 7 <i won beyond seven furlongs, and yet he is just the sort of horse to set a merry pace and stick in front to the end. One is influenced in this opinion by Vallar’s brilliant burst witnessed at Ellerslie last Tuesday morning. That was an exceptionally fine trial, and with just his share of the luck it is more than likely that trainer J. Williamson will follow up his Auckland Cup success by providing the winner of the big mile. Other distinct possibilities in this event are Reremoana, Branson, Bright Glow, White Fang, Awarere, In the Shade and Lorient 11. Reremoana won in 1925 and 1926 and In the - Shade registered the best performance of his career when he paptured the stake 3 2 months ago. A detailed review of this event is given elsewhere. Sufficient to say here that the elect of.backers may be: VALLAR and BRIGHT GLOW 9 T 1 G.N. CHAMPAGNE STAKES Of £1,500; 6 furlongs Gemlight . . 8 10 A good deal will depend upon just whether Gay Supremacy • | Ift Ballerina has thoroughly recovered from the effects of Polvxena 8 8 her m i s * ia P in the Manawatu Stakes last Thursday. Supremacy appears to stand out so much-that it is to be China ... 88 hoped that- the daughter of Lord Quex is at her very ♦Clever ... 8 S best. Then it will be a real race, for the manner in Gay Ballerina 8 S which Gay Ballerina spreadeagled the Challenge Stakes M^ na n ff ’’ ‘ o c field at Trentham recently, showed that she was top Dueiiona • • class and well worthy to rank among the best of them. If the filly is not quite herself then it looks as if the task will devolve upon Eaglet to chase Supremacy. It is quite possible that a mild surprise will be effected, but one cannot do other than confirm the wisdom of going strongly for:SUPREMACY and GAY BALLERINA o OO MANGERE STEEPLECHASE •J.OL of £400; about 2J miles Potoanui ... 11 0 This will be the first race over the big country and -Kings the hill at headquarters for six months, and for that Guard . . . It 0 very reason, quite apart from the spectacular features Mangani . . 10 1. associated with ’chasing events at Ellerslie, will arouse East 10 0 the closest interest. If the race develops into anything Uralla ". ’. .. 10 0 like the two steeplechases seen recently at Paeroa then Master Arch 10 0 patrons are in for a treat. Potoanui has plenty of Vexatious . . 9 10 weight, but he is well forward, and if not bustled unduly Polyphemus . 9 5 ]-q s prospects will be good. King’s Guard is a fine Jiih ’ ’ o o Jumper at any time, and if started here Mangani should Rawenoti’ .’ 9 0 improve on his disappointing efforts of last winter over the same ground. Star of the East went two good races at Paeroa, and on the second day scored easily at three miles. Uralla may go well, and also Master Arch, who ran second and third at Paeroa. Vexatious is a newcomer to the game, and Polyphemus is too hard to follow. The last time the latter went over the Ellerslie country he straddled a fence on the hill and stayed there. Lucilius has shown promise in his preparation, and Ashleigh, a likely one for the future, is preferred to Rawepoti. It is an interesting field, and the investments may come freely for STAR OF THE EAST, POTOANUI A 7 ONSLOW STAKES *»• Of £400; 6 furlongs Awamutu ..90 Xot a strong field by any means, Taurua .... 7 3 Carl Idem . . 9 0 there is a real good chance of wali-vUßelle * 7 0 TP 1 . i,, CT- TJ,-j nc .X S *5 , rrf.ll-> -DtllL. . 1 '■> Pellette 8 0 springing a coup from among the Lady Suzanne 7 0 Currajong'.'. 710 light-weights if there be one en- Bennie.... 7 0 Royal dowed with a fair turn of speed and Praetol -''l2 Finance ... 7 9 reasonable stamina. Royal Finance showed dash at Takapuna a couple of months ago and then went off, but is reported to be all right now. Motere, the sister to Liaison, was noticed finishing in fine stvle at Pukekohe, and if there is plenty of money for this one then it can be assumed that she has been well tried. Gay Duke can do better than his Trentham form suggested, and further down there are possibilities in Bennie, Praetor and Rose Lupin. When bettors sum it up the actual favourites may be: PELLETTE and MOTERE A C 7 EDEN HANDICAP 7*ol Of £400; 1 mile Good Boy ..9ft This is the only hack race on the Standfast ~70 £, ir i?!* 1 ?®-.* 5 17, card for the opening day. and judg- Gay Cockade 7 0 Prothblower 8 * ing by the fact that there were no Justify ... 7 0 Some Lady . 712 less than 21 acceptors it is evident Salamander 7 0 Respirator*. . 7 8 that owners have taken advantage Gen 7 0 Monsogne .78 of the opporunity.
