Oarsmen From Five Clubs Row Trials

MEMBERS’ ENTHUSIASM END OF SEASON AT HAND Excellent weather and a conveniently high tide prompted oarsmen from the five city clubs to row trials on Saturday and bring the conclusion of the season a step closer. A pleasing ieatture of the afternoon’s sport was the enthusiasm of club members, Waitemata and Shore particularly being able to start six and five crews respectively in their sets of trial fours. Auckland rowed a challenge race for the Kohn trophy and St. George’s mustered four crews for trial fours. Handicap single sculls for the Laidlaw Cup were decided by West End. There were 10 entries, and G. Norden won the final by two lengths WAITEMATA Six crews started in the trial fours ■rowed by the Waitemata Boating Club for Mr. H. Buck’s trophies. He held the advantage until about 300 yards from the finish, when Stroke's slide commenced to give trouble, and Keegan went to the fore. A great fight, ensued for the line, Keegan gaining the decision from Mackay by a length. Final: Impey had the race in nand all the way and won by three lengths. ST. GEORGES Trial fours for the Dingley Memorial trophy were decided by St. George’s Rowing Club. The course inside the embankment was used and C. D’ Authreau notched a decisive win. The crews were: H. Final: D’Authreau won comfortably by three lengths. Tong kept level for the first quarter mile, but dropped back in the latter stages of the race. NORTH SHORE Choppy water on the course from the Sheerlegs to the boathouse was en-

countered by North Shore members J who rowed trial fours for club trophies. ■ The crews were:—©a vies (str) Paton, Moore. Burton < I w); Korn (str). McCallum. Stean. Eagles (bow). J Second heat: Crews were lined up to the ferry wharf, when Norris ran into the lead. Dean was close up and came up first to win by a length. Third heat: Farrant rowed a great race and held the lead until well past the wharf, when Davies challenged successfully and crossed the line one and a-half lengths to the good. Final: A great tussle all the way between Dean and Davies. Dean had a steadier swing and won by a Dare length. AUCKLAND G. Jonson was successful in defeating A. Coutts in the challenge race tor the Kohn trophies rowed by Auckland over the long course from Orakei. The crews were:—G. Jonson (str), R Martin S. Scott, E. Horsfall (bow); A.' Coutts’(str). A.
