Anc J aer underworld row is stated to have caused a shooting affray which was almost in the nature of a pitched battle in Richmond. Herbert Maher, aged 36, and Thomas Maher, aged 35, were admitted to hospital with bullet wounds. The latter had part of his face blown away and is not likely to recover. It is stated that four men and two women drove up in a car and fired at the two Maher brothers. One was hit. The other grabbed a shot gun from his brother and fired point-blank at one of the attackers, wounding him in the face. The attackers then fled in a taxi, with the injured man. A woman is stated to have told the driver of the taxi that if he told the police anything she would slit his throat.
