NOBILE DEFENDED

PRIORITY OF RESCUE SWEDISH FLYER EXPLAINS (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 9 a.m. NEW YORK, Tuesday. Captain Lundborg, rescuer of General Umberto Nobile after the Italia disaster, has arrived In New York. He said: “General Nobile should not be blamed for being the first rescued. If anyone should be blamed, I am that one. I insisted that he be saved. “Captain Tornberg, chief of the Swedish rescue expedition, and an officer in the Royal Air Force, ordered me to bring back General Nobile, because he felt that the general would lend his experience and knowledge of the conditions to help us to rescue the other missing members of the dirigible Italia’s crew.”

The commission which investigated the tragedy blamed General Nobile for badly handling the airship, and for accepting priority of rescue; and he resigned rank and office.
