“GHOST” SENSATION
CONAN DOYLE INVOLVED STRANGE STORY OF TRICK (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 11.5 a.m. LONDON, Wed. The noted spiritualist, Sir Arthur Conon Doyle, figured in an unexpected and dramatic incident telegraphed from Nairobi and published here. Sir Arthur at a spiritualist lecture, illustrated with lantern slides thrown on the screen, a picture of a ghost, which, it was stated, was believed to have been taken in a house at Nottingham. A prominent Nairobi man, Mr. Palmer, dentist, stood up in the audience and declared that the photograph was one of himself. He was the ghost. He added that years ago he and his brother arranged to trick a party which was fruitlessly searching the house for the ghost. Mr. Palmer said he grimaced before the camera with the result that, with manipulation of the exposures, a ghostly apparition was produced on the plate. Sir Arthur accepted the explanation and stated that he would not show the picture again.
