TAKAPUNA BOROUGH
At the meeting of the Takapuna Borough Council last evening, an estimate was given by the assistantengineer, Mr. J. D. Bodle, that the cost of surfacing with tar the unconcreted part of King Edward Avenue, the main road through Bayswater, would be £7Bl. The matter was referred to the incoming council for consideration when preparing the estimates for next year.
In reply to the council’s application for additional police supervision in the borough between December and Easter of each year, the Police Department advised that it considers the present staffing of the district to be adequate. The department would, however, be glad to have particulars of the council’s claim for the increase asked for. It was resolved that a demand be made on the Waitemata County Council, in terms of the Governor-General’s warrant, dealing with the respective contributions of county and borough toward the cost of Inga Road Bridge, for payment within one month of the final portion of the county's contribution.
Application was made by Mrs. J. F. Sands for permission to remove sand from the Wairau Estuary. The council resolved to issue to the applicant a non-exclusive and non-assignable licence subject to the applicant entering into security for a faithful return of sand taken, and for payment of royalty at rate of 5s a yard. The town clerk submitted the district electors roll for 1929, a total of 4,343 appearing on it. No statutory objections having been received, it was resolved to sign and print the roll. Leave until the end of the council's term of office was granted to Cr. M. L. •Wilkins, who leaves to-morrow on a holiday- visit to Great Britain. Alleging that the new joint destructor in Puriri Street was creating a nuisance to those resident in the neighbourhood, a ratepayer of Dominion I Street threatened to seek Supreme i Court protection unless steps were | taken to abate the alleged nuisance. The letter was referred to the joint committee administering the destructor on behalf of the three boroughs affected.
Instructions were given to the traffic inspector to prosecute in cases where gross breaches of the borough by-laws relating to speeding were proved. It was also resolved that the by-laws inspector be appointed a special constable.
As a further step in the long-stand-ing dispute with Devonport borough concerning the water charges made for water supplied to Takapuna, the Works Committee made certain recommendations. There being no system where- | by the supply may be accurately dei terminal, and the council's engineer j not being prepared to vouch for the ! last account rendered, it was recom- ' mended that Devonport be invited to ! a conference. Also, it was considered that ways and means of formulating a satisfactory basis for future charges should be devised. The recommendations were adopted.
