DISTRICT CONFERENCE. NEW OFFICERS ELECTED The annual conference of the Auckland • district of the Manchester Unity. Oddfellows Lodge, was continued in Auckland yesterday and to-day. District Grand Master Bro. Walter Gubb presided. For the ensuing year Bro. F. Best was unanimously elected Grand Master. Five members stood for election for the District Grand Masters chair, and after two ballots Bro. W. G. Pitcher was elected Bro. John McLeod was unanimously re-elected District Se» ret iry, Bro. John Clark Treasurer. Bro. W. Perry trustee, and Bro. W. Dean auditor. Bro. Dean was elected to act as District Secretary during the absence of Bro. McLeod. Bro. McLeod \\ as voted CIOO as a slight recognition of his service as District Secretary during the past 30 years MAYORAL WELCOME This morning the Mayor. Mr. G Baildon, attended the conference, and welcomed the deputies to Auckland. Mr. Baildon complimented the ordei on the progress it was making. One thing he admired was the tendency t<_ encourage members to exercise thrift Ho had noticed this particularly it the hospital work. Some people complained that friendly society member: got their treatment at the hospital fot half the money of other people. The difference was that the hospita usually got its money from society members, whereas there was a ver\ different story about non-members. Bro. John McLeod pointed out tha friendly society members were payini more than other classes of the com munity toward the hospital. Over per cent, of the hospital income cam. from members, while the other peopT paid less than 2o per cent. Opportunity’ was taken to compli ment the Mayor on his i'.ne work ii getting the healthful beaches o Motuihi open to the public. PRESENTATION TO SECRETARY A motion was passed expressing tin utmost appreciation of the district fo Bro. John McLeod’s services as distric secretary for the past 30 years. At a ceremony yesterday the Unite* Friendly Societies’ representative: waited on the conference and presente* Bro. McLeod with,a travelling cabine clock in recognition of his services t< the friendly societies’ movement. Thomas, F. A. Smith, \Y. McMillar A. D. Young, "W. Perry, K. V. Cooke, £ j D. Fade, J. A. Gray. J. A. V. Mattsoi. W. G. Smith and R. L. Scott; repre sentatives to Friendly Society Confer ence, Bros. T. Aitken, W. Dean, W Edwards and W. McMillan. A remit from the Loyal Jubilee Lodge to promote a fund for the purpose of assisting widows and orphans was referred to the management committee for a report. The Grand Master of the New Zealand branch, Bro. F. Pritchard, and the Deputy Grand Master, Bro. JI. S. M. Quigley, together with the Grand Secretary*, Bro. A. G. Shrimp ton, and their officers waited on the conference, having arrived from Wellington this morning. This evening the visitors will officiate at the installation of the. newgrand master and officers for the Auckland district.
