TRAPPED BY FLAMES
TRAGIC STORY RELATED MAN’S LEAP TO DEATH (United Servime) HONG-KONG, Tuesday. A thrilling story was told to-day by an American naval man, Charles Piccioli, who is lying in hospital with serious injuries to his spine as a result of the lire in the King Edwanl Hotel. The patient said he and a naval friend named Kish were occupying tin* same room. They were aroused and found their escape was cut off by the flames. The two men procet'ded on to a verandah on the fourth floor. They saw fire-escapes but could not reach them. They remained half an hour on the verandah. The inferno was increasing and then they decided to jump through the flames to a net held in the roadway below by firemen. First the two men knelt and said a prayer. Then, after shaking hands, they jumped into space. Kish missed the net and was instantly killed. Piecioli leapt and remembered nothing until he found himself in hospital.
A special inquiry is to be opened into the cause of the fire.
