CHURCH AND STATE

MR. STALLWORTHY ANSWERS DIVINE CALL CONCEPTION OF PATRIOTISM “As representative of the State I am happy to be with the Church to-night,” said the Hon. A. J. Stallworthy, M.P., in proposing the toast of “The City of Auckland” at a tea given last evening to celebrate the opening of the Trinity Methodist College and Hostel. “There must be,” he continued, “cordial co-operation between church and State, for it is the duty of the State to interpret the theoretical idealism of the Church in terms of practical politics for the benefit of the whole country. “It is as clear as daylight to me,” he went on, “that a call to help in the politics of my country is a Divine call and I believe that the highest conception of patriotism and citizenship lies in the response to this call.” Mr. A. J. Entrican, deputy-Mayor, quoted figures to show the astonishing progress Auckland had made in the last 50 years. “It is time we began to boost Auckland,” he said. “We have a magnificent heritage and we should make the most of it.”
