BETTER TRANSPORT

MOUNT ROSKILL’S PLEA MAJOR LOAN FAVOURED The need for increased facilities in transport in the thriving district of Mount Roskill was stressed to tips Transport Board yesterday afternoon by representatives of the Mount Roskill tload Board. The representatives told how many residents in the area had to walk several miles for transport. So inadequate were the existing services that some residents had been compelled to change their residence to nearer the city.

“The object of this petition,” the leader of the deputation said, “is to see if improved facilities cannot be granted, or through services under private enterprise be instituted. Feeder services are certainly not in the interests of our district, which has a population approaching 6,000. They are not in the interests of the board.” In congratulating the board on its decision to present alternative loan proposals to the ratepayers, deputation members urged that the board should impress on the ratepayers the importance of the suggestions. Mr. J. A. C. Allum, chairman of the Transport Board, assured the deputation that his board was anxious to give Mount Roskill greater facilities. The ratepayers, further, would have the importance of the loan proposals impressed fully on them. The deputation’s request was referred for discussion in committee.

The deputation was emphatic that Mount Roskill had extremely good prospects and a considerable area of land was available. Efficient services were regarded as necessary. The Transport Board was assured of the support of the district in the major loan proposal.
