COLLAPSED IN STREET
MIDDLE-AGED MAN’S DEATH
While on the way to his house in Fowlds Avenue, Mr. George William Irving McEwin, aged 50 years, collapsed on the pavement in Edendale Road last evening about 7.30. He died in the ambulance while being taken to the hospital. He had been staying with his brother, Mr. A. McEwen, licensee of the Hobson Hotel, and had been in bad health for some time. His death was due to a hemorrhage, which probably followed a fit of coughing.
The late Mr. McEwin served in the South African War, leaving New Zealand with the fourth contingent. Again in the Great War he saw service, sailing with the eighth reinforcements. Since the war he has been actively interested in the affairs of returned soldiers and was on the executive of the Auckland South African Veterans’ Association. He was also a keen Freemason. The funeral leaves Little and Son’s mortuary at 1.30 to-morrow afternoon for the Papakura cemetery.
