ACADEMICIANS

Club Makes Bow to Auckland MUSICAL INTEREST SOUGHT An organisation with original ideas for fostering interest in music is to make its appearance in Auckland this month. It is the Academic Club. T» EALISING that Nevv Zealanders, in music as well as in other subjects, reach a certain stage o£ interest and have not the incentive to go further, Mr. and Mrs. W. Morris, well known in musical circles in Auckland, have been foremost in forming the club. Mrs. Morris is to he the first president. Already a committee of 12 has been selected and the club will hold its first meeting on March 25. The idea behind the movement is to keep alive the interest of those who have followed music. Lectures, social gatherings and recitals will all occupy prominent places on the club's programme. CHOIR AND ORCHESTRA Suggestions are now being made for the formation of a choir and an orchestra. The first assembly of the club will be marked by a recital including prominent works of Beethoven, Brahms and Bach. After that, lectures from prominent musicians, elocutionists and vocalists will be sought. A large membership is expected. Music teachers and their pupils will be invited to join the club and the officials are certain that the opportunities for study will make the club prominent in Auckland and throughout New Zealand. All forms of music will be investigated and modern music will be studied. Another feature will be occasional gramophone recitals to illustrate fully sections of musical thought. Classical dancing is also to become an interest of the club. Auckland already is well endowed with musical societies, and the Academic Club, opening new liDes of development and seeking the interest of teachers and students, will be a welcome addition.
