DROWNED IN SURF
FATALITY AT DUNEDIN SWIMMERS RESCUE GIRL Press Association DUNEDIN, Monday, A bathing fatality occurred in i the surf at St. Kilda yesterday afternoon, when James Rackley, aged 20 years, lost his life. Miss Marion O'Connell, who was bathing with him, also encountered difficulties but was rescued. The two bathers were in the water about 100yds on the Lawyer's Head side of the safety xone, which is clearly marked by two red flags. There were a few people about at the time, but those who saw the bathers did not at first realise that they were in any danger, as both were within their depth. On hearing the girl call out another swimmer helped her ashore, while two others attempted to swim out to Rackley. A very heavy surf was running and this, in conjunction with the strong rip setting toward Lawyer’s Head, rendered their efforts futile. By the time they reached the spot where Rackley was last seen he had disappeared. Rackley was employed at Shacklock’s Foundry. This is the first drowning aceiden to occur at St. Kilda for nearly five years. The body has not been recovered.
