MR. W. G. CONLEY DEAD
SYDNEY “HERALD” DIRECTOR SYDNEY, Friday. The death has occurred of Mr. William George Conley, a director, and formerly general manager, of the “Sydney Morning Herald,” in his 61st year. Mr. Conley had been ill for a long period. He is survived by one son and a daughter. w The late Mr. W. G. Conley became general manager of the “Sydney Morning Herald” and “Sydney Mail” in 1906. He was born at Eton Vale, QQueensland, on September 29, IS6B, and was a son of Mr. W. G. Conley, formerly a contractor at Warwick in that. State. He was educated at Warwick public schools with a view to becoming a teacher. He then studied for the Bar. His newspaper career was begun in a printing office at Warwick. He joined the “Sydney Morning Herald” as a reporter in IS9S, and rose to the post of chief of staff. He carried out this task so ably that it surpr sed no one when he was selected as general manager upon Mr. Samuel Cook’s retirement. For some time Mr. Conley held a commission in the New South Wales militan - forces, and was transferred from the reserve of officers to the active list in April, 1915. He was employed during the war in administrative duties with the Australian Infantry Force and the 4th Field Artillery Brigade. He was a director of Sydney Hospital, member of the council of the Sydney Chamber of Commerce and president of the Rotary Club, 1926-27.
