BARQUENTINE ABLAZE
GILBERT ISLANDS FIRE SWEPT FROM STEM TO STERN SYDNEY. Friday. The last of the fleet of barquentines trading between Sydney and the South Seas, the steel vessel Alexa, registered at Wellington, has been burned to the water’s edge and beached at Butaritari, Gilbert Islands. Advices received in Sydney say the fire occurred yesterday. Flames swept the Alexa from stem to stern. The crew of 11 men and the master, Captain Heyden, all of Sydney, are safe.
