FIRE AT BIRKENHEAD

OLD HOMESTEAD BURNED

Fire completely destroyed a sevenroomed house in Hinemoa Street, Birkenhead. early this morning. The house, which has been unoccupied since Christmas, was once the old homestead of the Highbury Estate. an 4 was then owned and occupied by the late Mr. W. F. Hammond, the present owner being Mr. E. G. Skeates. \ Mayor of Birkenhead. The fire broke out about 4.30 a.m., the alarm being given to the Northcote Fire Brigade by Mr. A. Bailey, who noticed the glare from Northcote. When the brigade arrived the fire had a good hold, and there was no chance of saving the building. The house was insured for £2OO in the Home Insurance Office.
