GAS-HOLDER COVERED

WORK FINISHED TO-DAY

After live weeks of rattle and clang on the new top of the Auckland Gas Company’s largest gasholder at Freeman’s Bay the last of the 40,000 rivets was driven home this morning. The job was expected to take two months, but time was saved by the accuracy with which the makers cut the plates, rendering it unnecessary to alter any of the rivet-holes punched at the foundry.

The gas-holder will be tested by pouring water into it until the air is compressed and the movable sections lift. Soapy water is then poured over the top and bubbles will form over any leake, which will then be caulked.

In a few days the top will be covered with red lead and a few days later with a special tar paint for ironwork.
