AFTER THE TITLES

MONDAY EVENING’S SWIMMING CENTRE CHAMPIONSHIPS Nominations for the events in the Auckland swimming championships at the Tepid Baths on Monday evening are fairly large and another big representation of Auckland’s best swimmers is expected in the nominations for the remaining races on Tuesday evening. The Auckland Centre has been well off as far as the bagbear of most championships—the unexpected absence of prominent swimmers—is concerned. Practically a complete list of the ablest swimmers is shown. A. W. Raper, sprinter, and Jimmie Magee, promising breaststroke swimmer, figure as the most notable absentees from Monday evening’s events. The field in the men’s 100yds is made up of swimmers already selected by public opinion. The title-holder, Farrell. will be extended fully. Gordon Bridson. Auckland’s distance champion, is opposed by a formidable quintet in the 220yds, but everyone expects him to win decisively. He is in excellent championship form and should show his ability further in the quarter-mile on Tuesday evening. Ena Stockley will not be opposed in the race for the backstroke title, but she has to contend with the Parnell girl. Doris Magee, in the women’s sprint race on Tuesday evening. The contest between the pair will be one of the attractions of the championships. On Monday evening Dorothy Grant, the title-holder of the women’s 440yds championship will have to stave off Edna Champion’s challenge. The pair will compete in the furlong on Tuesday evening. Three swimmers who will be watched in the intermediate girls’ 100yds are Misses M. Smith, P. Robertson and B. Hanlon. Several handicap races will add interest to the programme.
