COLTMAN’S WIN

N.Z. BOWLING SINGLES BREMNER BRILLIANT IN RINKS AUCKLANDER’S GREAT RECORD (Special to THE SUN) WELLINGTON, Friday. Giving a sound, consistent exhibition of drawing throughout his match against de Launay, Archie Coltman ran to an eight-point win in the final of the New Zealand Bowling Singles Championship today. It was an Auckland triumph over another Aucklander, both the finalists beinq Northern men. The game was purely an exhibition of drawing the shot on a slippery green, when every fraction of an ounce in weight counts feet of the running. Coltman on the day outdrew his man, though really there was not so much between them perhaps, as the score would seem to denote. Up to the ninth head the going was even. The twenty-first head was not played, Coltman winning, 20 —12. BREMNER IN PAIRS FINAL In the pairs, Findlay and Turner went down in the second round against Routley, of Kelburn, 21 —17, after a fairly close game, in which the Kelburnites had somewhat the better of the play, this game being held up owing to Findlay being engaged in rink play. Bremner’s defeat of McWhannell was accomplished in the West Enders* best style, the Hataitai men not having a look in. Bremner then met Doherty in a match in which Doherty had to be beaten twice, and the Aucklander led off right from the bell. A single, a pair,, a three, and a single, and West End was leading, 7—o, on the head. Then they lost two pairs and a single, and the score was 7 —5 on the seventh. Bremner then held the mat for six ends, notching a single, a three, a pair, two singles and a pair, and he was 17—5 on the board. Four singles to Doherty, and on the seventeenth the score was 17 —9 Very tight play then followed, Bremner placing well and not giving Doherty a chance of landing a pot. A single and a pair against Doherty, and Bremner was 20 —9 on the nineteenth. The Kelburn rink was now in a bad way, and West End got four on the last head, the opposing skip failing to burn the head. Bremner on his showing to-day should again defeat this rink in their second game to-morrow morning. A GREAT RECORD Bremner won the championship rinks at Christchurch in 1924, Hill, Ure and Maher being associated with him. At the same tournament he was run-ner-up to Carswell (Taieri), winner of the 192 4 championship singles. He has competed in fourteen tournaments in succession, and has won his section in the rinks 12 out of 14 times. He holds four club singles... and won the Christmas tournament singles title at Invercargill twice, and, with Clark, won the Auckland Centre pairs in 1928. He also won the Southland champion rink shield three times, the shield being held at present in Invercargil., Bremner having donated another. Bremner was defeated by North (Te . wamutu) in the fourth round at Tliorndon, 17—22, and by Snaddon (Victoria Club, Wellington), at the Wellington green, 24 — 30, and received his third defeat at the hands of Doherty (whom he meets in the final) by 17 —21 on the Wellington green. A KNOTTY PROBLEM In the Bell-Bremner match on Friday, the West End skip drove and the kitty bounced high in the air. I. Clark put up his hand, and made a neat catch. The head was immediately replayed, and so a knotty problem was not settled. RINKS FINAL TO-DAY The final for rinks will be played at 9 a.m. on Saturday. West End (Bremner, Clark, Needham, C. Hardley) plays Kelburn Koutley, Howat, Petrie), Doherty, leading for Routley, is also in the pairs semi-finals, playing Edwards in the afternoon session. When Blair (V.8.A.) was defeated in the pairs this afternoon by Edwards, Australian hopes of landing one big prize “went west.” Blair was a very consistent player, and was generally predicted to be sure to reach the semifinals. Edwards (Temuka). a great tourney player, is going well. In the doubles he defeated Bain (Levin) and Blair (V.8.A.) by handsome margins. In the former game lie landed a six, a five, and three fours. GOOD SCORING In the fourth round of the pairs, McWhannell played Franks (Masterton). The former secured a seven on the thirteenth, followed by a four, while Doherty, in defeating Ardell in Friday evening’s rink match, got a five and a four on the last two ends to win by a point. Auckland and district have no representatives in the doubles, being content to win the singles and rinks.
