FIRE TOLL TOO HIGH

DUNEDIN LOSES £35.000 SURVEY OF YEAR’S WORK (Special to THE SUN) DUNEDIN, Tuesday. Two lives, and property to the value of £35,000, was the toll taken by fire in Dunedin during the past year. There was a record number of calls, 508, 91 of these being false alarms, largely malicious. Chimney fires accounted for 127 and there were S 4 calls to rubbish and scrub fires. The ambulances attached to the brigade answered 1,198 calls from as far apart as Palmerston to the north and Central Otago to the south. Altogether 8,351 miles were covered. Six machines guard Dunedin, including the telescopic ladder machine. The staff includes 35 permanent firemen, 15 auxiliary firemen on duty for night calls, and an additional 11 for theatre work. The superintendent admits that the toll this year was too high, but explains this was largely due to delay in giving calls.
