FERRY FACILITIES

INCREASE IN FARES OBJECTION RAISED A motion that the additional revenue to be derived from the Devonpert Steam Ferry Company, Ltd., be assessed at £. 1,320; that the ferry charges be increased on a percentage basis to provide for that amount; and that the by-laws be amended accordingly found one dissenting voice at yesterday’s meeting of the Harbour Board. After the report of the Finance Committee had been adopted. Mr. J. Hislop rose to record his protest at the charge being passed on to the public. He explained that he was under the impression that the board Mas dealing with another report. Mr. E. \V. Inder remarked that Mr. Hislop had no right to say whether or not the Ferry Company should pass "he charge on.

Mr. T. Bloodworth said that there were just as many people on the city of the water who used the service as on the North side. They all represented people who used the ferries and If they were satisfied that the board’s charges were fair and just for the new facilities provided it was their only concern. Mr. Inder said Mr. Hislop was a Party to the charges which had been

arrived at to the complete satisfaction of all concerned. He could not at that stage take exception to what he termed passing the charges on to the public. Mr. Hislop: I don’t want to convey the impression that there has been any imposition.

The chairman said the board had merely fixed the charges on the recommendation of the commissioner, Mr. J. S. Barton, S.M.

The Hon. E. W. Alison said the board had given the Ferry Company every opportunity of going into the charges which had been mutually agreed upon. In his opinion the charges were strictly fair.

Mr. Ilislop said he had felt all along that there was no need for any increase in the charges. He considered he had a perfect right to express that opinion. The motion was carried with Mr. Hislop dissenting.
