NEW MUSIC TEACHERS’ BOARD EFFORT TO RAISE STATUS The Auckland Society of Alusicians is now officially recognised as a body, the members of which are entitled to vote for the election of members of the new Alusic Teachers’ Registration Board. An announcement to this effect has been made in the New Zealand Gazette. Auckland’s representation on the board will be two. There will be nine members altogether. One will be appointed by the Government and the remainder by* music teachers. The object of the scheme is to raise the status of music teachers. The board is being set up under the provisions of the Music Teachers’ Registration Act. which was passed at the last Parliamentary session. Registration is not compulsory but penalties are provided for in the Act against people who falsely represent themselves as being registered. Those who have been engaged in teaching in the Dominion for a year before the Act comes into foree on January’ 1 next will be entitled to registration if they’ apply’ within two years. -jOther persons who may become ! registered are those who pass recog- ; nised examinations or who satisfy the board that they’ are competent to teach music.
