CITY’S POOR

Down-and-Out Mission Prepares for Christmas ASSISTANCE WANTED Graphic stories of the life of the poor in Auckland are told by’ Mr. P. Williams, who is in charge of the Down-and-Out Mission. “Alany of the cases which come under my notice are pitiful,” Air. Williams says. “The mission committee is doing its best to help the workless over the holidays, but most of the cases are urgent.” One extreme case given by Al.r. Williams is of a man with a family of 10. He lives at Mount Albert, but has been unable to find work after months of searching. Air. Williams describes the man’s plight as ate. A Grey Lynn carpenter with eight in his family is similarly placed. On Sunday, at a meeting in the Old Central Mission Hall, in Albert •Street, 70 of the workless were present. They were all in urgent need of employment. The usual number at tho meetings is 40. Over Christmas, the mission committee intends to provide bigger meals for the men. It is now appealing for clothes, funds and supplies for a special Christmas effort toward relief. In the past few months the work by the committee has been strenuous. In four months 40 men from the mission have been placed in regular employment. They have all proved satisfactory employees.
