CHANGE IN ALPHABET

TURKEY’S DIFFICULTIES SLOW WORK FOR PUBLIC Times Cable. LONDON, Monday. Tlie Constantinople correspondent of “The Times” states that one outcome of the inauguration of Roman characters in the Turkish alphabet is prolonged cinema sessions. Captions on the screen are accompanied by explanations which the spectators do not readily grasp. Consequently they insist upon the words remaining on the screen so long that the entertainments are much extended. The newspapers have quickly adapted themselves to the new conditions. They were published to-day modelled on those of London and Paris. They have instituted a whole page of photographs. The circulations have fallen heavily. There is only time to read one newspaper, but the public plods through that one because it is recognised that reading a newspaper is the most practical method of becoming accustomed to the new alphabet. The newspaper proprietors have imported modern machinery for the change. They have also decided to adopt the Western style of make-up. Therefore the new characters have entirely revolutionised the Turkish Press. .
