GOOD SUBURBAN SCORING
Ponsonby the Leading Team
FREE-HITTERS were plentiful on the Domain on Saturday afternoon. Archie Dunning knocked up the monster score of 164 for Harbour Board and R. Burton smote all round the wicket to score 125 for Ellerslie. Ponsonby is the leading team in the Suburban Association’s senior A competition.
As the big attendance of supporters expected, Ponspnby emerged victorious in its match with Harbour Board, although last year’s champion team did its utmost to reach the Ponies’ first innings tally of 382 for nine wickets. The Board finished up the afternoon with 292 on the register. The losers fought doggedly, but there is no doubt that, batsman for batsman, the Ponies gave a superior showing. Green Lane could not work into any sort of combination against Victoria, which had 258 on the board as its first innings effort. The Lane did nO% carry out its promises of improvement, and in two innings failed to reach Victoria’s opening score. The good win by Victoria has given the new team a well-deserved start on the competition ladder. A surprising feature was the dismissal for no score in the Lane’s second innings of George Cox, the Sussex professional. He lifted an early shot into bowler Moore’s hands. In the first innings, Cox had scored a clean-cut 26. Ellerslie, with several batsmen, headed by the century-making Ralph Burton, in scoring vein, excelled itself and scored 243 against Glen Eden’s opening effort of 206. The Glen Edeners took things too casually at the start for safety. The Burton brothers and Matthews and Gedye soon realised that there were weaknesses in the fielding and began to strike out lustily. At one stage, the crowd was treated to the sight of “sixer” after “sixer” sailing merrily over the fence. Ellerslie played in a businesslike fashion and indicated that a useful combination of scorers will be set up. After a spell of two weeks, the wickets were in great trim. They played accurately, without favouring either bowlers or batsmen.
made an uncertain swipe at it, only to give an easy catch to a sub. Seccombe was decidedly uninspiring, even when he hit his hix he did so in a most disinterested manner. He made 11 ere he was sent away. The display of G. Cox. the Sussex professional. aaus the surprise of the afternoon. In his first strike he scored a fair 26, and then only with a fair amount of poking. "When he again went to the wicket he Avas dismissed c and b A\*ithout scoring. The last wicket for the second innings fell for 118. Victoria ran out winners by an innings.
