HARD-WORKING PONIES NOTCH HARBOUR BOARD

DUNNING’S SPLENDID EFFORT Ponsonby is a team of hard-workers. Individualism does not count for much in the side’s programme, and to collective effort, Ponsonby owes much of its success. When Harbour Board set out to overtake the Ponies’ score of 382, the batsmen played cautiously, seeking for flaws in the fielding. The Board batters were too cauious at first and were somewhat flurried when Spicer made his debut as a bowler. Storey and Breese were early victims and with only 36 on the board, three wickets were down, Turner having gone out to Mackie. Then Badeley, Moore and Dunning showed their mettle. They stepped out to the bowling and rattled on runs. Badeley was caught by Roberts behind the wickets after notching 45. He timed all his shots beautifully. Moore ran up a useful 39 and partnered well. Dunning’s selection of strokes kept the fieldsmen guessing. In knocking up his score of 164, he hit one “sixer” and 25 fours. For sheer determination, his performance rose head and shoulders above the batting seen so far this season. He was more enterprising than Bob Innes, who scored 113 for Ponsonby. It was certainly Dunning’s dashing day. He was caught just when the spectators were anticipating a double century. Board’s remaining batsmen did not do anything remarkable. Nicklin Avas Ponsonby’s most successful trundler. His tricky deliveries cost Harbour Board five batsmen. He was not tried until Ponsonby’s bowling had been sorely tested by Dun* ning, Badeley and Moore. Through a long innings, with all sorts of bowling, there were only three extras. Wicketkeeper Roberts gave a fine display. Ponsonby deserved its win. It outclassed Haribour Board in its strongest department—batting.
