SHOCKING MURDER
WOMAN FATALLY SLASHED YOUNG SON’S BRAVE FIGHT MELBOURNE, Friday. A shocking murder was committed in a block of flats at East Melbourne this morning. The victim of the crime was Mrs. D. Ledger, aged 38. Her throat was cut and she had deep wounds on her chest. Thomas Bacon is now in hospital suffering from a deep cut in his throat and another on one of his wrists. The woman’s young son made a valiant attempt to save his mother. Mrs. Ledger occupied a flat in the building with her son, a college boy. The latter heard his mother scream and rushed into her room. There he saw a man killing his mother. The boy seized the man’s head and pushed it back. He also thrust a finger down the assailant’s throat, but could not prevent him achieving it s fell purpose. The distracted lad then rushed away to get a pea-rifle, but he could not find any cartridges. Bacon was discovered in a side lane. His wounds are not likely to prove fatal. The motive which actuated the crime is a mystery.
