NO WARD SYSTEM
MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS COUNCIL SEES DIFFICULTY “Will the council continue with the same election system as last year, with over 60 candidates and a huge number of informal votes, or will it adopt the ward system for the elections next year?” This, in effect, was the question submitted to the City Council last evening when the returning officer pointed out that if the council proposed to adopt the ward system it would have to do so immediately, as the roll had to be prepared in the next two months, and if the ward system was to be adopted it would have to be considerably altered. The Mayor explained that the question was discussed informally at a meeting of the Finance Committee this week. Cr. Ellen Melville pointed out that recent additions to the city had made the position very difficult. “It seems to me that an amendment to the Municipal Corporations Act will be necessary,” was the view of Cr. J. W. Kealy. It was decided that no action be taken.
