TRANSFER OF CABLES
NEWSPAPERS APPROVE COMMENT IN BRITAIN (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) LONDON, Thursday. The newspapers, both Conservative and Liberal, approve the cable transfer. Editorials are concentrated upon Labour’s argument that the merger ought to have been in State ownership. A Labour amendment was rejected in the House of Commons, and the Bill authorising the sale of the cables was read a second time by 258 votes to 134. The “Daily Telegraph” says the fact that the merger was the outcome of a conference between representatives of Britain, the Dominions and the Crown colonies, is sufficient answer to Labour’s theory that the Bill is the product of an “international robber gang.” National ownership is impossible in the Empire, the component parts of which will not accept the doctrine of nationalisation, which is “flyblown.” The “Financial News” says Mr. MacDonald assumes that State enterprise is a guarantee of public utility. It is because of evidence to the contrary that experiments such as the Imperial Communications Company are necessary.
