Expert Forger
London Master Rogue Gets Seven Years’ Gaol j JUDGE BAFFLED (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Received 10.15 a.m. LONDON, Thursday. The most expert forger known in London for 35 years, was sentenced to seven years’ gaol for forging cur-j rency notes. j A remarkable feature was that the j work was all done by hand with a j drawing pen in varying inks. Under a magnifying glass each was so perfect that the banks had the j utmost difficulty in detecting the forgery. The forger traced from a genu- j ine note, and then inked the copy with extraordinary cleverness, simulating watermarks by painting with grease. Forgeries were reaching the Bauk of England weekly. When he was arrested the man had 100 half finished notes in his possession. The forger’s name is William Reynolds. He is 56, slight and greyhaired. It is revealed that a woman was recently sentenced to three years’ gaol for passing one of Reynolds’s notes. She was remarkably loyal to Reynolds, refusing to divulge his whereabouts or any information about him. The judge, carefully examining the notes, confessed that the forgery baffled him.
