Art Standards
Closer Co-Operation SKETCH CLUB OPENING “Sketches which are of a higher standard than many of the pictures hanging in the homes of Auckland people are to be seen at the exhibition of the Auckland Society of Arts Sketch Club,” said the president. Dr. E. B. Gunson, in, opening the exhibition last evening. The private view was' well attended. Dr. Gunson was introduced by the former president, Mr. Stewart Boyd. The desire for a closer co-operation between the various societies interested in art was mentioned by Dr. Gunson, who went on to say that the interests of any group or of 'any individual would not be subordinated by such co-operation. Art must have scope for its free and unfettered expression. Coordination would afford opportunities for discussion and comparison, thus providing a stimulus for progress and growth in the minds of individuals. Dr. Gunson spoke of the work of Mr. Fisher and his colleagues, and pupils of the Elam School of Art. In referring to the City Art Gallery, he asked whether it was getting the best value for its money in the new pictures which were being bought? Were the students seeing the best in art, and were the correct standards being set. to enable students to train .and to form a true judgment? It was for these reasons that he urged a -closer co-operation among societies interested in art.
