TYPES OF FLATS
DEVONPORT REGULATIONS PROPOSAL FOR AMENDMENT Devonport Bor'ough is troubled about the type of dwelling flats that may be erected in its area. So far, the by-laws have required that only one building be erected on any one building section. Permits for separate dwellings,♦ even under one roof, have been steadily refused. Connecting doors have to be provided for the purposes of'efficient fire-fighting. As entirely separate flats will let more readily there is always pressure brought to bear to sanction such dwellings. Last evening Cr. F. J. H. Ellisdon gave notice of motion to repeal the present by-law and amend it to provide that in cases where it is designed to be used a#; separate dwellings or dwelling flats at least three of the walls shall be external walls, and that the internal separating walls sha?i be of non-combustible materials, or, in the alternative, doors giving access to all rooms in case of fire shall be provided as the council may direct. Where separate flats are on more than one floor the ceilings between them shall be of fire-proof materials; if the building is more than two stories high it must be in brick, concrete or similar materials. Mr. C. M. Browne said that flats were the type of dwelling of the future. On the suggestion of Mr. T. Walsh the proposed by-law will be to the Town Planning Director for criticism.
