DR. R. MARTIN Dr. Robert Martin has died at Dun- < din, aged SO. For nearly 50 years lie practised his profession in New : Zealand, all but three years of that I time being spent in Dunedin. —PA MR. JOHN HECTOR STEELE Formerly a warrant officer in tlio Fourth Battalion of the Rifle Brigade, Mr. John Hector Steele, D.C.M., died in the Auckland Hospital on Saturday at the age of 47. Born in Sydney Mr. Steele came to Auckland as a boy, and before the war was well known in local aquatic circles, being a member of the crew of the keeler Rangitira, and also vice-captain of the Waitemata Rowing Club. As a sergeant-major Mr. Steele took part in the capture of Le Quesnoy, one of the last of the big episodes o£ tho war. When his platoon commander fell, Mr. Steele took command and behaved with such great gallantry tii.it he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal. MR. DAVID NORDEN One of the oldest residents of Herne Bay, Mr. David Norden, died yesterday at the age of 70. Born In Ballarat, Victoria, Mr. Norden came to the Dominion 48 years ago and for many years was licensee of hotels in Auckland City and Province. For it long time he was at the Commercial Hotel, Hamilton. He founded the Masonic Lodge Tawhirl at Frankton, and was first president of the Waikato Boxing Association. He was a member of the Ponsonby Bowling Club. He was ill for only a few weeks before his death. Mr. Norden is survived by his wife, three sons, Mr. A. C. Norden, Mr. H. D. Norden, and Mr. S. T. Norden, of the linn of Norden and Company, Limited, and by three daughters, Mrs. A. T. Percy, Dominion Road; Mrs. W. R. Percy, Suva; and Mrs. D. M. Ford. Milford. MR. ROBERT HAY Mr. Robert Hay, civil engineer of Dunedin, died at Waitonio Caves on Tuesday evening at the age of 81. Born in London, Mr. Hay arrived in New Zealand in 1865, and after being employed by the Provincial Government became assistant engineer in the construction of the Port Chalmers railway. From 1876 to 1920 he was in private practice and during the time was consulting engineer to the City of Dunedin, engineer for the Otago Dock and for various drainage, water and other large works. He was also a director of several commercial companies. At the time of his death r * , Ha y w*as making a motor tour of the two islands.
