STRUCK TAXI-DRIVER
FRUIT-HAWKER FINED £2 Resenting a taxi-driver’s refusal to hand over enough money to buy a packet of cigarettes Cletus Joseph O’Brien attempted to strike O’Brien was charged at the Police Court this morning with being idle and disorderly, having begged alms in Queen Street. He admitted assaulting Andrew Robert Ferguson, but pleaded not .guilty on the first charge. Sub-Inspector McCarthy described the case as rather peculiar. O’Brien had asked Ferguson for money to make up sufficient for him to buy a packet of cigarettes. Ferguson had told O’Brien to get his cigarettes where ne got his beer. O’Brien had then struck at him. A fine of £2 was imposed on the assault charge, the first charge being dismissed. O’Brien’s request for time to pay was not granted when Mr. McCarthy described him as a fruithawker who was drinking all iiim profits-
