WHISPERING CAMPAIGN
MR. COATES AND LIQUOR “PRETTY ABSTEMIOUS” Press Association DANNEVIRKE, Friday. At his meeting last evening, replying to an interjector about champagne, Mr. Coates said he %knew a whispering campaign was going on. A Voice: Do not take any notice of it. “I don’t,” said Mr. Coates. “It is the same old form of attack. He knew that the people of New Zealand were just as shrewd as anybody else in knowing where it started.” There was no man in New Zealand fitter than he was, who worked at higher pressure. He was working all the time; he never slackened up if he had a. job to do; and he could not do that unless he was pretty abstemious. In response to a call, three cheers were given at this stage for Mr. Coates.
