SURPRISED AT UNITEDS

PUBLIC WORKS CONTRACTS MR. DICKSON AT REMUERA Surprise that the United Party should suggest the abandonment of the present system of carrying out public works was expressed last evening by Mr. J. S. Dickson, Reform candidate for Parnell. He was speaking in Somervell Hall, Remuera. Sir Joseph Ward, he pointed out, had said that he would have public Works constructed by contract. Mr. Dickson contended that this would mean the disbandment of a fine body of workers, who could be classed among the best Civil servants. 'The point had been made by opponents of the Government, in reference to company taxation, that a widow was harshly treated in having to pay 4s 6d in the £ in company tax. Any widow whose income was below the limit of taxation could obtain a refund on application to the Commissioner of Taxes. At the opening of the meeting there were frequent interjections, but Mr. Dickson received a good hearing for most of the meeting. His address was similar to those he had given before. Mr. F. G. Mellars presided.
