INTERJECTOR BACKS DOWN

SERIOUS CHARGE FALLS FLAT TOO MUCH FUSS There was a somewhat extraordinary happening at a meeting at Westmere addressed by Mr. J. S. Fletcher, United candidate. An interjector, after making a serious’charge, decided to back down and withdraw. Mr. Fletcher ridiculed the Government’s assertion that it could not put men on a big highways scheme with only six weeks’ preparation. “I can take you to a building started in Auckland that was ,uj> five storeys in six weeks. If competent men want to do these things, they can do them,” he said. The Interjector: I can take you tfi that same building in 12 months’ time and it will be falling down. I know as much about building as Mr. Fletcher does—at least I think I do. “That is a very serious charge,” said Mr. Fletcher. “This man is charging the city engineer with passing plans of a building that is going to fall down in a year. Apparently he has some grudge against the Fletcher Construe-* tion Company. To the Interjector: Are you going on with the charge, or are you going to withdraw. The Interjector: 1 will say the same about Arapu'ni. Mr. Fletcher: That is not the ques--tion. Will you withdraw or go on? The Interjector: If you are going ‘to make a fuss about it I will ‘withdraw. (Laughter and applause.)
