OLD AGE PENSIONS
Sir,— I notice the candidates for election have nothing to say about the old age pension, with the exception of Sir Joseph Ward. He says he will remove the restrictions preventing old age pensioners from earning more. Very few are able to earn more. They should be allowed to earn what they can. All pensioners getting Government superannuation (which allows them to live comfortably) add considerably to their income, and no questions are asked. Why should men and women who have blazed the trail in New Zealand, and borne all the rough work. be thus handicapped? Seventeen shillings and sixpence a week, with an insulting inquiry held in the courthouse once a year, to find
out if they have earned a few shillings more, is not pleasant } r ®a t “ e ” t - d Most of the men and women recel ing the old age pensions are highli rt spec table —brothers and sisters to tho. who are receiving the Governroer superannuation. Why all this U ThB old age pension should be built up by a fund, contributed b> tn< people, and ‘-lled^e^atmnal^pen^on.
